Cooking with wood: Outdoor ovens
Original: wood-burning ovens
Clearly, the trend is going back to the original things. We buy locally, grow a raised bed and get our eggs from the farmer whenever possible. In addition, bakeries are having to close down. Finding artisan bread of the usual quality is no longer a matter of course. And now that we have bought our food consciously and regionally, we want to prepare it in the best possible way.
This is where cooking and baking with wood comes into play. It wasn't long ago that our grandmothers baked bread and cakes themselves. They put roasting pans with meat on the wood-burning stove or in the embers. The primitiveness of fire, its simplicity and its power have touched people from time immemorial. With the help of wood-burning ovens, millions of people fed themselves for centuries. It still works today - and progress makes it even more comfortable.
Modern wood-burning ovens: independent and versatile
A wood-burning oven is not just a bread oven, a pizza oven or a tarte flambée oven. A wood-burning oven is also a jam cooker, a game goulash cooker, a lasagne cooker or a dessert wizard. It is an all-rounder. You light a few logs of wood until the oven reaches the desired temperature, and you can also cook various dishes simultaneously at similar cooking temperatures and depending on the size of the oven. Self-sufficiency is the keyword in this context. Become a bit independent with a wood-burning oven. And take advantage of knowing exactly which ingredients are in your food. This is an advantage not only for allergies.
Wood-burning ovens in the garden
In order to enjoy your wood-burning oven in the garden or outdoor kitchen, there are a few preliminary considerations to bear in mind: How many people are in my household? What do I want to bake and cook in my oven? It is possible to prepare an entire Christmas dinner in the wood-burning oven, including starter, side dishes and dessert. Should the oven have the fire in the baking chamber or better a fire compartment and a circulating air function?
- And where should the wood-burning oven be placed?
- Should it be placed somewhere else in winter than in summer?
- Will it be under a roof or outdoors?
- And do you want a modern or a traditional design?
Back to the roots
In the end, a wood-burning oven not only makes us independent and flexible, but also happy and satisfied. We appreciate our food. We live more consciously. We reduce emissions because we don't go shopping as often. We reduce waste because we do without packaged food. We live healthier because we only put good things into our meals ourselves. And we show our children that it is worth preparing meals and taking time to eat together. They will remember it like we remember our grandma and her wood-burning oven.
